Atlanta’s Citywide Growth and Community Development
As the third-fastest growing city in the U.S., Atlanta is quickly expanding with new community development happening throughout its diverse neighborhoods. From residential buildings to entertainment district expansions, new projects are transforming the city as it becomes a hub for young professionals and families alike.
Most recently, making major headlines, the downtown entertainment district project, “Centennial Yards,” was said to be continuing to the next phase, with groundbreaking scheduled for July 2024. Transforming Downtown Atlanta, Centennial Yards will revitalize the areas surrounding Atlanta’s major entertainment venues with new businesses, retail and apartment buildings. The first phase of the five billion dollar mega-project is expected to be completed by 2026, in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In addition to this downtown entertainment project, expansion and growth is happening all throughout Atlanta, especially in Atlanta Air Center’s neighboring communities. In the last couple of years, Hapeville was a hub for private development, with recent projects including new restaurants, Signal, a large luxury apartment building, Stillwood, new-construction townhomes, a community greenspace and splashpad.
Though new projects continue to advance in Hapeville, this year, East Point is stealing some spotlight with the long-awaited East Point Commons project and a new modular apartment development. Though East Point Commons was initially announced in 2022, the official ground-breaking ceremony took place in late December of 2023. The nine-acre development’s proposed goal is to add housing and retail to the area, increasing walkability.
Recently announced, a smaller residential project is also expected to make its mark on East Point. The project’s plan from Safe and Green Development Corp, include 132 rental units, built primarily from old shipping containers.
The neighbor of both Hapeville and East Point, the Atlanta Air Center, is at the center of Atlanta’s growth and development. Surrounded by restaurants, entertainment, new-construction housing and, of course, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the thriving office space offers close access to some of Atlanta’s best offerings.
